After 20 plus years of watching Oprah here in Chicago ... I admit, I had become a tad bit immune. Once an avid AM Chicago watcher, I hung in with Oprah well into her 2006 season before giving up and tiring. By the time O had shut down Michigan Avenue, I was simply annoyed. I kept saying to my mom after each "last this, and last that", "Is it over yet?????!!!!"

Enter Oprah's Life Class.

As a blogger, it is my pleasure to expose my incredible readership to things that encourage healthier living, and trust me, signing up will do just that.

My beautiful pooch pooch was ALMOST a shelter dog, thankfully Chicago's Finest will go to any lengths to save a life ... even four-legged lives. My angel was bait in a pit-bull fight. Someone phoned 911 and CPD (Chicago's Police Department) went in, rescued her and placed her in a cell. My co-workers rallied me over to see her and she jumped rich into my arms!

I have quite a NICE blogroll if I do say so myself!

Today I was reading Tom Valenti over at "Just Appease Me" and was very impressed to see he, as counsel and an officer of the court like me, had Conflict Resolution covered!!

I sat for hours watching the other linked videos that handled the subject and was happy that people are recognizing alternatives to violence.

I also noticed how Black culture, and the hip/hop culture, has tremendously influenced today's youth ... I suppose that is a whole 'nutha topic we must explore ... MANY of these messages were raps!

As a result of recent altercations and events around the globe, I began to ponder ...

In the U.S., is today's aggression result of:

* the Black communities continued struggles

* today's youth emulating what they appreciate about Black culture i.e. gestures, language, clothing

* trying to be tough, cool, relevant

* classism

* juvenile behavior

* influx of cartel cultures in urban communities

* economic disparities

* failure to properly educate students in preschool and middle-school before issues arise

* failure to hold parents accountable

* inability to reach populations that are most at risk because many of them are not even in the school system

* failure to teach accountability for actions

* glorifying violence

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I don't know ... these are simply thoughts off the top of my head ... whatever the case, my recommendation is that we all put our heads together AND FIGURE THIS OUT!!!

I fell in love the second I suspected I had a pea in the pod.

I did not particularly care what the sex would be, what color, fat or how tall ...

My main concern, and it still is - is for health, character and ability to love.

So, from the second I was aware, I began to change my 'tude, the things I ingested and was adamant about safety, seat-belts, and industrial responsibilities to our eco-sphere.

Yup, one zygote started ALL that!!!

Well, the cards were on our side and 15 years ago, I managed to bring someone into this world who is pretty darn healthy - and let me tell ya ... there were NO organic food markets back then. I simply went to markets that I knew went straight to local farms. My other blessing was that my little tyke's pediatrician was from Italy and never prescribed any antibiotics for my brood. She was authentically nature-based before it became trendy and I am forever grateful for this stroke of good fortune.

She taught me how to mash basic dinners and to use as little processed baby food as possible.

THAT was a chore in the beginning, but it soon became part of our routine and lil Bub went directly from breast milk to mashed organic as possible diet that included little to no processed baby food.

This was such a HUGE help when it came time to feed a 3 year old broccoli. It was LOVE instead of repulsion.

SO, my ten tips to get kids to eating veggies??

1) START EARLY
eat them so your breast milk has the flavor. once they are old enough, feed it to them. don't ask, just do it.

2) EAT THEM ALL THE TIME
who says asparagus isn't a breakfast food???

3) LEARN TO SEASON
once taste-buds become defined, palates are seeking flavor. don't be afraid to spice.

4) PUT VEGGIES IN EVERYTHING
smoothies, bread, rice, pancakes, crepes

5) LATE BLOOMING?
add veggies to meatloaf, baked potatoes, mask in foods that the kids already enjoy

6) DISCUSS
have frank discussions (or eat hotdogs Chicago-style - which is a SALAD on a hotdog) about health, energy, best practices to living right

7) BE A ROLE MODEL
healthy eating is as healthy eating does

8) INCLUDE ALL MEMBERS, yes the dog
when choosing the best diets, include everyone, even the family pets

9) EXPERIMENT
new recipes are fun

10) VLOG
do a video about it and post it. when your family sees how much fun can be had, they will jump on the bandwagon!

Ten Reasons To Visit Virginia Beach!

Yes, it is summer.

No one leaves Chicago in the summer because it is just too awesome!

Our beaches made the "Best Beach" lists, we even have palm trees (that disappear by October), so why would I be writing about Virginia Beach?

Well, historically it is a MUST SEE region! A vacation hot spot that resonates with the American researcher and the fun-loving All-American!

"Virginia Beach" is SO very frequently mentioned in movies, who wouldn't want to know why?

As someone who has only been as far east as the Carolina's - and an hour layover in NYC- the Atlantic Ocean appears SO attractive!

How about loving volley ball? It could just be a rumor, but I have heard "Virginia Beach" "Volleyball" and "tourney" in one, if not many conversations.

The seafood. (do I need to expound on this one, at all??)

It just might be fun to drive! Quite a few avenues that predate our existence would certainly prove fun en route to Virginia Beach's gorgeous destinations.

Wouldn't it be fun to network and connect yourself with the fabulous folk who defend us in Norfolk and inviting them to chill with ya on Virginia Beach!

The seafood. (driving this one home).

Be around to understand exactly what a boardwalk is....

There is also buzz about the art gallery. How grand to be able to uplift your community from within?

Of course a gargantuan reason for traveling to Virginia Beach would be to attend a beach party...

and finally, well of course! The seafood!

Enriching scenery coupled with the desire to be a world-class traveler might propel one's desires to achieve greatness by experiencing the ultimate vacation spot. Beach homes are equally as attractive to the entire "fun festival" because they go with nostalgia, housing someone who has desire to learn, apropos only to a fraction of what the average person would be seeking to experience are awesome and attractive plans.

Tournaments and Music Performances appear to be in abundance SO, I am one who thinks that Virginia Beach is a destination that could encompass a family outing, gals/guys vacations, couples and, or, a lone trip to endearment with just yourself!

Ten Time-Saving Tips To Make Your Life As A Busy Mom Easier!

Motherhood is consuming. Single motherhood is all-consuming. I've raised my children and attempted to be their Wonder Woman since birth. My divorce was not until the boys were about 5 and 7, but I was quickly learning that being proficient at timing and utilizing skills to make short-cuts without letting anything at all suffer was key to our survival. There is SO much to the idea of having things in place, so, needless to say, in order for your family unit to survive and PROSPER, one must become proficient in wizardry.

Casting time-spells is by no stretch of the imagination easy.

My boys are now 15 and 18, so technology was NOT on my side!

I have noticed, however, that while technology has stretched to zones I never thought possible, the older your children are, the more time you need! WHY?! Well because you have AGED!

Any possible techniques I have learned to be in bed sleeping by 11:30 I will now share with you:

1 - when the week begins, make sure you have started a huge hearty meal that will serve a few lunch and dinner slots and last a few days. Continue adding new side dishes to that one meal, and by day 3 be able to morph said meal into something new (i.e. soup, tuna or chicken salad, sandwich fare, or something that will be great on a salad)

2 - when tackling laundry, never stop, keep going until you run out of detergent.

3 - don't assign chores. Make it a necessary part of their living and breathing to assure it gets done. (i.e. if you don't take out the garbage you don't eat)

4 - ONLY grocery shop with FULL meal making in mind. No - " We need this or we need that" Think menu. Think in group categorically.

5 - if possible, buy toiletries in bulk via the internet or huge warehouse. its cheaper and most convenient.

6 - opening one those multiple online bill paying accounts was one of my best ideas. using your bank's online service also is a huge time-saver.

7 - scheduling your doctor's and kid's doctor's appointments in the same vicinity or physician's group is a time-saver - also going on the same day to avoid taking mass time off for not fun things is a plus.

8 - don't read email everyday. if you receive email via your smartphone delete unwanted crap, pick one day of the month where you go through unnecessary email while flagging important email - address those right away.

9 - drink PLENTY of water. being dehydrated slows you physically and mentally

10 - take time to watch the sun rise and set, it reminds you of why you are doing all of this in the first place!!!

I may be busy, but I thoroughly LOVE my life and everyone in it!!

The Art of Crunching with Kellogg’s

Kellogg’s FiberPlus Cereals are YUM! That is important when you are trying to stay fit and still have FUN!

Healthy, after-all, is also a state of mind. It’s action and reaction. It’s eating right AND exercise.

Taking charge of your life and physical presence can be fun and delicious with the variety of tastiness Kellogg’s has presented us with!

Rich in flavor, these cereals are full of more good stuff than I expected: whole grain wheat, sugar, rice, chickory root and being certified Kosher Dairy in the Berry Yogurt Crunch made me smile! (The Cinnamon Crunch is Kosher/Parve too!)

My teen son and I begin our days just before sunrise. We have full schedules and often breakfast is a glass of pomegranate juice. I have begun to tire from all my attempts to find healthy that tastes good.

Having choices like Kellogg’s Cinnamon Oat Crunch and Kellogg’s Berry Yogurt Crunch really helps the battle.

These two cereals are excellent ideas when getting to the start of a wild and crazy day!

The tiny round O’s of oat crunch are so cinnemony! They actually make the perfect treat in a bowl with Almond or Coconut milk ~ or on the go in a baggy!

The flakes and yogurt pearls in the Berry Yogurt Crunch are surprisingly sweet while providing the need I have for a lot going on in my palate. I seem to enjoy different amazing textures while eating, and this provides a zest in my mouth that wakes me up and gets me going.

I try to do at least twenty minutes of yoga in the morning before eating. I stretch until the kinks are out. This, I find, helps me to handle the day’s stressors. Knowing that I had a choice of these cereals waiting for me encourages me to be thorough and quick so that I can treat myself!

Only one gram of fat, with 1.5 in the Cinnamon Crunch, is a huge plus as well. There is more sodium than I’d like, and 12g of sugar (7 in the Crunch) but eating this in a small proportion at the start of your day - after a good, solid workout makes this a replenishing meal that I say thumbs up to.

My son and my father also found themselves smitten.

The 6 hour football workouts my teen is enduring this summer call for such fortified, fiber filled yumms. My 80 year old father picks him up and takes him everyday and he swears these two new boxes in the house made him feel perky while satisfying his belly. He snacks voraciously for a Granpa.

So my Cadillac excursions were phenomenal! Really enjoyed pretending I was a high roller driving my Escalade down RUSH STREET CHICAGO on a Saturday night!

The 2011 Escalade with ONSTAR and the stitching and leather and entertainment and ..........

Can't say enough about it which I now know why it is the car choice for so many celebrities!

Now the CTS is a sedan. Four door with an engine that HUMS! I SO felt like Don Johnson from Miami Vice driving that remade Chevy Corvette! (It was made to look like a Ferrari).

The horsepower is 556 @ 6100 Torque 551 @ 3800. This is a WHOLE lotta car.

Sleek, sexy, clean and sharp. Driving this was an experience. Bose surround ... oh wow!

I am a natural freak. I am always seeking preservative-free ways of living.

Once upon a time I was grossly overweight, splotchy skinned and miserable. I was ALWAYS tired and I never felt right. It took a journey, but once I found my way, I eliminated the bad things to the best of my ability. Our government does not always have our best interest at heart. Believe that we must take responsibility for the things we ingest. When I began my journey, it was extremely difficult to find things that were not filled with chemicals and artificial agents.

Our world is toxic. The more effort you make to eradicate carcinogens as much as possible, the better you will live.

Companies are taking heed. I was SO happy to see Mary Kay jump on board with mineral based cosmetics.

My skin is SUPER sensitive to cosmetics. If there are too many preservatives I will swell. Eye shadows, foundations, blush. They must be almost all natural or I will look puffy and become itchy. These new Mary Kay items are GREAT.

I was given Mary Kay samples via Blogher. I used the silky caramel/caramel doux mineral eye color on the lower lid. I slightly brushed a hint of midnight star/nuit etilee on the inner lower lid ... just a hint. The upper outer lid I generously brushed sienna/terre de sienne. I also topped everything off with shy blush/pommettes rouges! How did I do???

How You Keep Your Family Happy

Keeping a family happy starts from the beginning.

I recall the very moment I suspected that I was having a child. Immediately I was in love, talking, cooing and having intense life-changing conversations with my blastocyst. I was determined to bring someone happy into this world taking every detail seriously and with joy. Thankfully the stars aligned and I delivered an incredibly happy guy.

Keeping him that way, knock knock, has been relatively easy! Even-tempered and thoughtful, a bowl of broccoli has often brought a smile from him. He never fussed, never threw a tantrum and so I made it my specific job to assure that I would do whatever I could to teach him how to keep his perfect peace.

Life has thrown hail on our heads many a time. A bitter divorce, separation from his beloved older brother, pneumonia, being homeless when he was 5 years old, running the wrong way during a gang shoot-out, all could have negatively impacted my little shining star but it didn't. He learned early that happiness comes from within.

Toys don't bring it, lollipops don't bring it, nor do coins or new shoes. Of course he gleans average teen collectibles ... you know shoes, baseball hats, those wrist thingys, t-shirts and music ... he is a normal boy, but "Joy cometh in the morning" has been our lead theme and maintaining happiness is important because it affects health and mental stability.

It is quite an art to be a healthier, happier, you! The balance of good eating, proper rest and exercise and keeping an enlightened frame of mind might, on occasion, be hit or miss, yet it must also be considered art. Knowing when to heighten your concern about an issue and being able to calm down in a rational way takes practice and restraint.

Keeping your family happy is also keeping a happy self. Having "ahha" moments should go hand and hand with having "wow", "I can handle that" and "WHATEVER" moments too. Our tomorrows are borrowed so we should make every second count in a thoughtful, meaningful, loving manner. We should embrace the catastrophes with as much grace as we do our delights. It is a challenge but one that is solid and worth its own weight.

What Is My Favorite Thing About Easter??

Spring is here! YAY! Well, okay, technically Spring is here, the thermometer just has not realized it yet, here in the Midwest.

My grass has just a smidgen of green sprouts, but I know it is on its way ... isn't it?? It has to surface at some point, and even if it doesn't, I will sing its praises anyway !

Why? Because Spring and Easter go together "like peas and carrots" as Forrest Gump would say! So many rows and rows of goodies, treats, and neats decorate the aisles. Bunnies and baskets, candy and toys. I noticed all of the commotion right after St. Patty's Day. The difference is huge because now is the reign of the peeps! Those marshmellowy treats have now taken on most holidays but are most visible at Easter-time. I too fall easy victim to the sugary delicacy. Meltey and gooey, leaving a glaze around our mouths.

Of course the jelly beans, bellys and Starbursts must accompany any easter holiday because who can resist them? The thought of all the Easter pleasures is already giving me a tummy ache!

The chocolate Easter eggs, beautiful lillys and linens, all bring a smile to my face. The holiness of the holiday is often obscured as we give way to commercial dissecting of humans and their consumerist needs.

Throughout the years of my celebrating Easter, it has been embraced year to year quite differently.

My early year reflections include ham and mashed potatoes, sparkling grape juice, a Spring frock and brand new patent leather shoes.

I grew fond of rainbow colors and the pleats, but those "Mary Janes" ... they were not something I longed for. Those shoes always, always hurt my feet!

Yes, when I was little, Easter Sunday's were spent at my uncle's home surrounded by so many family members it was often insane. The tradition I recall is trying to find a spot - somewhere - anywhere, where I could be comfortable listening to Judy Garland and the gang belt out Follow the Yellow Brick Road. It seems as if The Wizard of Oz was always showing during Easter Holidays of the 70's, playing on my fear of tornadoes and rolling through meadows in itchy grasslands.

Once I had my own family, I tried like we who celebrate do, to make it memorable and successful and of course, a delight. Many years I tried too hard, and had us booked from sun up to sun down with church, traipsing through parks looking for treats, and visiting everyone we could think of . After realizing less is more, we began to find that being able to eat and enjoy was far more important. Yes, you see traveling from one place to the next might seem as if you'd be fed more than once, yet often times, we'd be running so much that we'd miss everyone's meal-time and end up at a drive-thru - YUCK!

Now that my son is a teen, the favorite thing about Easter is being alive to enjoy another holiday! Many of my elders have passed on. I am thankful I still have my parents, and am old enough to know that life is promised no one. As we make our way each day, the next second can certainly be our last.

My mom just stopped making my 15 year old his very own basket filled with chocolate, eggs, and toys. Last year he received a card and money. This year might be one of new traditions. Maybe a drive along the lake and brunch! We might fit in some other celebration. Or maybe, just maybe I will find a nice pair of Mary Janes that fit!

Driving the Midwest is a continuation of GM's "Chevy Missions" program.

As a direct benefactor of the mission program I eagerly fell into supporting "Driving The Midwest" and its current challenge - Our Town, Our Hero Vote.

I nominated Kelly O'Connor.

You may recall Kelly as Chief Coordinator of my very own Chevy Mission where we transported school kids to a middle school who needed their help mentoring peers and lending a hand in the after-school programs.

Our program ran 8 weeks and would have been a big, fat ZERO without Kelly's help and participation.

Why nominate a hero?

Introducing folks to Chevy's new exciting line of vehicle sparks true joy.

We all have a responsibility to promote things that are important to us individually.

For me, I have fallen in love with General Motors and the Chevy product! After an adult life of driving foreign, I was so impressed with the new relationship we were being introduced to. The automobile industry had betrayed U.S. trust and General Motors stepped up, interacted with the community intimately and I was touched.

Then I began to notice the product.

I LOVED all the models and was passionate about each vehicle I was allowed to sample.

What Makes You Feel Lucky?

Feeling lucky is a state of mind. I like to think that I own that state of mind. I truly have been lucky.

I could have experienced the worst case: Young Single Mom to an African American boy could have played out several ways ... and while I am knocking on wood as I type, I still consider myself rather lucky. I even dare to say, that if you believe as I do, I am blessed.

Living in an inner city is a challenge for any one. Tack on being single and raising a young, black male and you've just handled a grenade.

However, I studied my situation and took painstaking measure to balance and weigh options to assure, as much as humanly possible, that my son would make it out of his statistical nightmare and be intelligent, thriving, contributing, strong, member of his community.

Part of my plan involved watching lots of movies together.

Now that my goober is now a teen, I have difficulty savoring ALL of his choices, BUT we still reach common ground on occasion.

Even today, as you raise little ones, time has etched itself in your play-by-play with something impeccably memorable.

Top Ten Things My Kiddo Would Miss ...

...if I were abducted by aliens and taken to MARS!

I often feel as if I am living on MARS but that is not what this meme for Social Moms asks!

Being the single mom of a 15 year old, darling, teen-aged boy, who has been the light of my world, has been a beautiful and endearing challenge. I have been very careful to raise a thoughtful, conscientious, being who values others and his environment. What I have succeeded in is often reminiscent of the stuff classic horror films are made of ...The Blob comes to mind...

I can not even begin to tell you the smells that emanate from that oh-so-special being, and it is definitely something you would expect to find on Mars! So, if I was to be abducted by aliens, I suspect my life would not be THAT much different, though The King of Odor might suffer from the following:

MISS FOOD: My youngster was 5 years old when the Twin Towers fell. I panicked that he may need survival techniques and was VERY careful to teach him how to open canned goods without cutting his fingers off. I also addressed, when and if possible, warming the food. Additionally, he was instructed each year thereafter, on making simple sandwiches, scrambled eggs, pasta and toast. To date he can accomplish NOTHING. My 15 year old will go the entire day without food - and go for days - if I fail to provide pre-cooked items. I tested this over this past summer, so I am VERY sure he would lose 20 pounds before seeking edible fare.

MISS ODORLESS LIVING: If I do not physically turn on the water and threaten life he will not bathe. EVER. PERIOD.

MISS TEETH: At some point, seeing as though we have problems with teeth brushing as well ... should I be residing on Mars indefinitely, junior would most definitely loose teeth.

MISS FINANCIAL FREEDOM: "Mom, I'm going to the mall can I have $____ would become, "OH NO! Guess I will not be going anywhere."

MISS LOVE AND AFFECTION: tee hee, like why is this so far down on the list? As they grow older, we moms are lucky if we get the kisses we used to get hourly on a monthly schedule. I suppose he would miss these hugs and kisses??? ... awww!!!

MISS CLEAN LAUNDRY: I know, I've failed.

MISS THE PERSONAL CHAUFFEUR: The 24/7 driver would be vacationing on MARS for real - YES, I have used this as a threat before!

MISS #1 FAN: Who will cheer at all of his sports games???

MISS CONFIDANT: Who will listen, to not only the woes, but the master plans!

MISS THE BEATS: If I was to ask junior what he would miss, he would probably say, he'd miss me listening to him sing, rap and or dance... he is cute.

Yes, so after evaluating the importance I have in my kiddos world to write this piece, I can also state, with assuredness, and gracefulness, that these things are all part of my job... the MOST important job I have, and I would certainly miss them, if not more than he, if I was abducted from my sweet guy and held away from him on planet MARS.

General Motors made more dreams come true!

The Chicago Auto Show was spectacular. I was a Media Guest of General Motors. We participated in a Driving The Midwest "Chicago Photo Challenge" that I was pitiful at, but had fun at nonetheless.

My thought for the challenge was to place my GM vehicle at a favorite "CHICAGO" place that had character and presence. I parked the 2011 CHEVY AVALANCHE in front of The Billy Goat Tavern. The Billy Goat is famous in Chicago for its historical and legendary account in Chicago Cub baseball tales.

As legend has it, William "Billy Goat" Sianis and his goat, Murphy, are the culprits of the Cub's famous curse, that White Sox fans like me live for! You can read about it here. How apropos that the incident involved a playoff game against the Detroit Tigers!!

So, alas, the Avalanche made history look good! The rugged wheels, the incredibly classy decor, plush leather seating, comfortable display ... OnStar and the ability to run over any Chicago Snow Bank, made my week with the Avalanche so AWESOME.

Imagine. Something so fun and exciting as cars and being given the opportunity to experience them intimately!

For our involvement with the challenge we were given a close-up and personal with the 2011 CHEVY VOLT. Yes, the 2011 Motor Trend Car Of The Year!

Is that sexy or what!

Six feet of person (yes, I am that tall) fits comfortably in this Volt. Appropriately names for its FAST speed, race-like qualities and electric sustaining features.

In 2011 Drive the Buick Enclave!

What is the 2011 Buick Enclave CXL2 to me? It is finesse. I had the luxury of driving this beauty on wheels over the Christmas weekend. It was comparable to a music hall. The triple door seals and acoustic laminated windshield made the Bose Surround Sound XM Christmas carols I played sound like they were raining down from the heavens.

Seriously, the ride was so quiet and smooth. It was also comfortable. Each person riding can control their own temperature settings. This made for such a wonderful ride. I prefer 72 degrees while I operate the wheel ... that can be kind of warm for others. The 19 cubic feet behind the 3rd row seats came in handy with all the toting needed for the holidays.

I considered myself so lucky. A co-worker put in the request for me to try this 8 passenger vehicle out. GM and Connie Burke were so kind to oblige. Have you ever heard a Deputy squeal? It was pure delight to drive him around in this fine specimen.

The leather seating, stabilitrak , all wheel drive in the snow, Onstar, the all aluminum design of the v6 engine all made for a perfect whirl!

Where Do Our Dreams Go To Hide

New possibilities in my life resonate like a yodel bouncing around a mountain somewhere off foreign shores. I have been chasing dreams for decades now, but all I am really left with, at this time, in this place of my existence, is a civil servant's job ~ a life that is full, fulfilling - but not necessarily the life I WANT to lead. OR the life I felt I was supposed to lead.

While I was pursuing my bachelor's degree back in the late 1980's early 90's, my aspiration was life by the sea. In my visions, day after day would be spent chasing the perfect story. Words would just be spewing from my pen, while novel after novel piled up. I would wake up surrounded by my published works, publishers knocking down my door in pursuit of my crafted sentences.

Two decades later, I have not seen the shores of an exotic locale in 5 years, my pens are full and my pages empty. I have not published the great American Novel, won any literary accolades, nor have I accomplished world peace!

I managed to raise my son on my own, mother him and his dog, all while servicing felons as they attempt to reintegrate into society. I somehow managed a masters degree for which I am now grossly in debt. Not SO shabby, I must say ... after all, like Dad says, "there is no glory in mud-ville".

Thankfully, by a stroke of some incredible force, the prospect of achieving even a portion of my old dreams remains. These life assertions I desire are attainable, quite incredibly through blogging and social media! It is for that reason I stay perky, and thus, I persevere.

Back in 2007, Latrice Fowler and I met on Women For Hire. Tory Johnson's dream unfolded piercing everyone she touched with a brave new world. Her social media site was the first I ever belonged to. Women there were nurturing wounds, developing new confidences and fostering new relationships. Who knew it was "networking"!

The website was amazing and changed my life. Now I have visions of connecting women to better opportunities for themselves and their families. A woman's self worth feeds the globe in so many ways. We have voices that uplift with knowledge unbounded. We live, learn and love with fervor - and capturing it each day by sharing on our blogs and sites is both revitalizing and monumentally important. I want for my 3 websites a place where all can feel safe to understand each other and embrace differences. I want it to be stressed that eating better, operating our health, managing our goals can be fun, exciting and globally motivating. Touching some young woman in a remote part of the world with just one sentence is profound and it can really happen with the internet via reading our blogs, reviews and sites. All are responsible for small glimmers of information being sent out to thousands if not millions of folks who then begin moving outside of their comfort zones or perceived constrictions into higher understandings. It happened for me, so I know!

Now, about that spot that is waiting for me by the sea ....

Ho Ho AND WHOA, it is the holiday season!!! In conjunction with Blogher I was able to purchase goodies from The HomeGoods Store! The location here in Chicagoland is within the Elston Center 2731 N. Elston Avenue Chicago, IL 60647 773-276-3138. Who knew?

The parking was convenient, heck the entire shopping experience was convenient! I can't show you what I bought, well ~ because they're presents! BUT I can say that the staff was incredibly nice. There are huge savings to be had, and great buys to be made. The categories include several optimal shopping must-haves that ensure plenty of hours of fun. However, if you are in a hurry, that is cool too, because everything is well categorized and fully stocked.

I truly was able to purchase with the $25 card I was given by Blogher and Home Goods to buy well made, exquisite gifts.

This was a delightful time. I certainly will return to do more damage! Look out!

Dreams Of The Acadia

What is white, cold as ice, awesome and is NOT SNOW? The GMC Acadia of course! This vehicle is the stuff dreams are made of. It is roomy, handles and and is sleek with all the amenities. It can include a moon-roof - in the front and in the back - also room for the entertainment screen - WOW, imagine that! This one hits the road packing in all the pomp and circumstance and more!

It is as spacious as a truck, luxurious as any sedan, rides like the wind and handles like a race car. I could not help but whip around Chicago street's curves with extra speed to feel how the Acadia dug into the road.

In my opinion, it simply doesn't get any better than this!

Sauza Tequila & Chef Marcela Valladolid

If you partied at all in college, you have a tequila story. In fact, all night, that was the recurring theme for just about everyone. Yet shamed or not, within minutes we were ALL happily sipping away Chef Marcela Valladolid drink recipes!

We sampled several tasty drinks and "SAUZA TEQUILA" infused meal options during the course of the night - what a treat! A beautiful home as background, with the company of many Chicago area social media mavens taking "soiree" to a new level!

My favorite treats of the night were the deep fried olives, the brussel sprouts, and the warmed tequila sangria. For the "meat eaters" the tequila smothered turkey was a huge hit. So fun and fortunate! Kicking off the fall and winter season with ideas, glamour and good times - who can beat that!

I was invited to attend this dinner party and was not compensated outside of a swag bag that included two bottles of tequila and Chef Marcela's new book. I did not write this post inebriated and as always, the opinions are my own.

Be Fit with the Wii Fit!

So I FINALLY broke down and purchased a Wii. I've had a Wii fit collecting dust in my closet because I refused to put out $200.00 on yet another technical thingamabobby! But after failing to win one after entering every single imaginable give-away, after bribing over-indulged children I knew who had two or three, and after driving to the local Sports Authority on 15 separate occasions over the past year, I decided it was time.

No more excuses. I live a fit life, but just not fit enough. I feel that if I add this extra option, I can burn those extra calories that have somehow alluded my aging metabolism! Yes, I need the help of the Wii.

Why? Well, for a number of reasons. The first being I am overweight. Sure, I do yoga every single day, I walk my dog half a mile and I am still 15 pounds from where I wish to be! Second, my friend from High School is getting married over the holidays and the dress I want to wear looks good, but I want it to look GREAT, and lastly my son threatened to sell my Wii Fit Plus that I received at a Wii Party, if I did not use it! So I put my money where my mouth is, literally.

I slapped down that $179.00 and am actually very happy that I did! I spend 25 minutes doing yoga, boxing, running and balancing! It was truly fun and engaging. So keeping in tune with my fitness goals throughout the remainder of the year I will be sharing my journey and hope that you will be sharing your thoughts!

I have admired Forest Whitaker his entire career. Outstanding performances, being able to peel layers off characters, and revealing to us, a humbled, tortured side of the spirit - which has often amazed me. In "The Crying Game" we were awed that he could tackle dialect and alternative lifestyles seamlessly.

As a director, "Waiting To Exhale" was the Black-Woman-Done-Wrong anthem. "Hope Floats" dictated triumph when life kicks you in the behind. My response to both of these movies was an immediate "MUST HAVE" in my film library.

From Fast Times at Ridgemont High to Platoon (my child is named after one of the characters), Bird, to The Last King of Scotland, Forest Whitaker's visions have haunted and entertained me. Imagine my delight when I was told I could participate in the 46th Chicago Film Festival and The Black Perspectives Tribute in honoring him.

The evening provided insight to a marksman's mind. He nails with his quirky, often eccentric, performances. Forest was gracious mingling with us the entire evening.

Buick, also present as sponsor of the 46th Chicago Film Festival, was incredible hosting, common folk and Chicago's finest alike, at The Wit Hotel after the Q & A Regina Taylor conducted.

Actually I do!

So, when offered the opportunity to shop at Dominick's - well it was really a no-brainer. I was given gift cards to make purchases and tell you all how I did!

Dominick's has deep Chicagoland ties. It is not out of the ordinary for me to pop in there 2-3 times a month. My shopping card has ragged edges, and probably decades of age-old info on it. There are purchases from my years of diapers and baby food, to steak and cases of beer. Nowadays, however, my needs are as simple as feeding a teen boy. A few pounds of turkey lunch meat, ground meat, veggies and almond milk. On occasion, I even pick up my lunch!

SO, how about you? Shopping, for me, can be a respite - definitely satisfying the "caretaker" need that, as of late, I have been squabbling with myself about. Thinking about their frequent shoppers like me, Dominick's is now promoting a great program that is truly "Just For You"!

The great thing about "Just For You" is that you can easily log into your account and see your coupons, personalized specials (based on what you typically purchase) and your personal "Club Specials". Another neat feature shows most coupons available for a relatively long time. This impresses me because you may not need certain things each time you shop. Adjust Is A Must!

The warm day today eased the blow I was feeling concerning fall.

My fire has dimmed and I am, less reluctantly, adjusting to the change of season.

Little did I know that a little chiropractic maneuvering would be in my future and that it would really help things along.

Visiting my friends at West Loop Chiropractors turned out to be a much needed adjustment in my schedule!

The Open House I attended was more-so aimed at giving my cousin and my best bud a bit of support. Each of them have their physical and emotional complaints, so when I was invited by Doctor Rosen to come see the new facility, I made sure they could tag along.

Somehow my spine received a calling, if you will - a yanking would be more precise, and I somehow was drawn in to do more by actually participating - in the tour, testing the instruments and garnering knowledge.

While I have been to a chiropractor before, I have never been one that inspired me to promote its benefits. But here, I can happily and confidently now advise that while on this healthier, happier journey, one must always consider at least one visit to get "cracked".

I tease, and I am a horrible patient because I am squeamish, but the truth is, the doorway to optimal health often lies in this ancient science.

In the 1890's chiropracting began and has been a viable way to heal ever since. As with anything, there are the naysayers, but I firmly believe an adjustment here and there can truly be a plus in your healthy regimen.

Not having had any particularly unusual complaints, I must say that I feel darn great!

I was first treated to "therapy" that consisted of electric nodules that penetrated the tightness in my neck and back. It was 15 minutes of deep, undisputed heaven.

I do not enjoy having my neck manipulated. Period. So, who knew that NOWADAYS there is a tiny instrument that takes all the WHACK out of having your head rotated until it pops! Thankfully ... due to euphoria and expertise, I never heard a sound.

I was in and out in a matter of minutes. My head feels clear and I feel a rejuvenation that can only be contributed to this new-age adaptation of health. I can feel the congestion running down my throat. My ears have cleared and I feel energetic where there was the loathing seasonal lethargy.

My very comprehensive consultation was so accurate. I am not chronic by any means, but this exam thoroughly zoned in on my weaknesses and where I am falling apart.

Should you embark on this idea, afterward - drink PLENTY of water.

Headaches, ear aches, tightnesses, digestive problems and a host of other maladies can all be affected by the lack of attention we give to the nerves attached to our spines.

What are holidays for???

Labor Day is for workers, right?

Back on September 5, 1882, the first labor day was celebrated.

It would take until 1894 for Congress to make it a legal holiday - but these many years later, its force and commendable ideals remain firmly intact.

How did many of you spend the Labor Day Holiday?

I spent mine showcasing the incredible features on the Chevrolet Suburban to my sister and her dear husband who I fondly call "Brother".

While we joked that the 2010 Suburban requires a bus license, we could not believe how it handles!

No bumps, this big boy means business, and handles the road in quite a sophisticated way.

My Dad kept bellowing for the 300 mile trip (there and back) that "this IS luxury!" He also exclaimed a few times, "WOW, the ride is like butter." Once or twice he said, "THIS is a smooth ride."

My "Brother" zipped in and about his town with such ease and control - the boat clearly manages like a car!

Equally amazing is the gas mileage! Being in a small town we easily came upon E85.

Flex-fuel pluses include burning cleaner. Having a mixture of 15% gas and 85% anhydrous ethanol, E85 is WAY cheaper as well.

It also appears that E85 burns more efficiently. I have never driven one way of the trip on a full tank only burning 1/4th of a tank!

So, The 2010 Chevrolet Suburban again, displayed that it is top-notch.

Classy, reliable, sleek, sexy, smart and rocks the road.

Suburban is clearly the King of the Highway.

2011 Chevrolet Traverse ~ LOOKING GOOD!

You have heard me rave about the Chevy Traverse PLENTY this year .... and also the other Chevy's in their 2010 fleet.

I have favored the Tahoe emphatically ... but nowadays I am not so sure!

Having the 2011 Traverse this weekend has solidified my love and devotion.

With a 5 year, 100,000 mile warranty, 16 miles to the gallon in the city, a 3.6 liter SIDI V6 6 speed transmission, what's not to love!

Let's not forget OnStar and the REGULAR gas intake. My gas guzzling PREMIUM Nissan hurts my heart whenever I fill my tank.

The LTZ comes standard with a HOST of luxuries from leather seats, dual front, head curtain side and all rows air-bags. Heated and cooled seating. Bose audio. USB port. Oil life monitoring. Hands-free phone. 20 inch wheels!

Ten Tips For Saving Money During The Back-To-School Season

The Back-To-School challenges can be very daunting if you are not prepared.

Middle school is under my belt - I mastered being ready having had my kid in the same environment 10 years!

He started his former educational site at 3 years old and graduated 8th grade this past June! I jumped around on Cloud 9 for months! He achieved scholastic honors and was simply a joy!

Mid July a co-worker of mine - whose son is also entering as a freshman this fall - starte with the "Did you..." s.

"Did you pay for this and that" panicked me - got me into gear - but I hate panicking!

Having y eyes BUCK and led to a few gasps the first couple of weeks - now I have settled into reality. Finally I kicked into gear and am happy to share with you what I have learned for successful money saving this Back-To-School session!

   1) No matter the season - if you see a bargain - GO FOR IT!
I managed to get school shoes last Spring - keeping in mind there might be growth. Staples, etc. offer awesome coupons and deals - subscribe to their emails!

   2) Have an "Emergency Account" ~ of course you can use this for whatever comes up!

I actually have two. One for appliances that explode and the other for "whatever comes up"!

This way, as school approaches, you can dip in there and take what you need should there be an unforeseen fee or class requirement.

   3) Ask in advance -
The Middle-School experience so far, seems to have been extremely more organized with assisting frantic parents in purchasing mandatory pens and notebooks - THEY DID IT FOR US! For about $15 extra in tuition they simply purchased everything needed so, as we had in days past, there would no longer be crashes in the aisles at Staples as parents rushed to get the last red binder. High School? I have NO clue what pens etc are required. Making that call today!!

   4) Leave CUTE out of the equation.
Okay, I have a boy, but girls of school age are as hard on their clothes as boys. Buy good quality - but affordable being key to the equation. I absolutely lucked up on khaki pants (the required pant) at Marshall's in June. $15-19. I bought 4 pair. I lucked up again last week as Costco offered Docker's at the same price.

Black, navy and khaki. Now I have a bit of wiggle room when my active teen rips, miffs, or ruins a few.

   5) Don't fret
I think a lot of our mania is because we frenzy ourselves and our fellow moms. STOP IT.

The world will certainly keep on its axis if the kings and queens of our homes go without. Do NOT pay an exorbitant amount for something until it becomes affordable. (THINK BACK to all of the things we went without and we're fine).

   6) USE this opportunity
Those of us with children over 8, let them FULLY participate in this annual endeavor. Going without may encourage them to be more communicative about what they know they'll be needing. It is also a great time to teach budget skills and organizational skills.

   7) Themes are cute BUT...
Do they really need a themed lunch-bag for $12.99 or is the $5.99 deal just as nice. (One year I allowed my kiddo to decorate his own. It was fun and CHEAPER).

   8) Love
LOVE LOVE LOVE every second. BOY this is all going WAY to quickly.

   9) Have your list ready as soon as possible.
That will help you with impromptu purchases that tend to tack on the change.

   10) Remember your fellow mom and her kids.
I always have and always will, buy a tad more than needed, being extremely frugal and allows to give a few extra pens, reams of paper, or gently worn items to anyone I come into contact with in need.

A day at the Chicago's Art Institute can be emotionally draining and caloric inducing. Emotionally draining for me because I am so passionate. I experience things deeply, and enjoy art and music immensely. It really feeds my soul.

My friend, Sami Ari of SamiAri.net, invited me to a wonderful performance by Adam Marks. Pictures at an Exhibition was the piano version of Mussorgsky, coupled with art commentary and exhibit suggestion.

It was quirky and enjoyable, and at some points moving. Afterward, Sami and I were famished.

The nearby Qdoba, at 58 East Randolph, Chicago, was an excellent respite to recharge before our exhibit stroll.

Qdoba kindly offered to allow me to sample their NEW "Mango salad" along with a guest. Sami and I were so excited to take a gander and a grub.

Available with or without the "shell", the salad was filling and fresh. Cafeteria-style, the restaurant is clean and inviting. Mango is always delicious. As Sami and I took our first bites we exclaimed simultaneously "REFRESHING"!

A lovely example of tasty goodness! Bravo! We didn't even need dessert. We were happily fulfilled.

Qdoba's salad comes highly recommended.

Arriving fresh to Chicago's market this month, Angie's is a delightful, refreshing and natural product that I can whole-heartedly endorse.

I was not paid to provide this assessment. I simply love popcorn and saw that they were giving away samples to interested parties.

I am ALWAYS interested in trying new treats! Being a big, popcorn fan, this was a no-brainer!

Too bad for me, "NO-BRAINERS" entail absolutely NO THINKING and I nearly ate an entire bag myself.

(I do NOT recommend that).

In this case, there were several fights, a few tummy aches ( again, do not attempt to eat the entire bag at once ) and lots of moaning amongst the "nom nom nom" munching.

Busy Body Books!

Busy Body Books reach out to the "old school" writer in me.

Back in the time when folks had note-books, you could really tell the writer from the average student.

"The Writer" had an identifying planner or journal while "the student" ran around with those horrid wire notebooks. In my day, I carried both. As a high school writer, I carried anything that one could write in.

As time progressed and I became extremely attached to the things I penned. Often, I carried leather bound journals, legal pads encased in leather, fancy covered books with unlined paper and drawing books or sketch artist pads to capture my words.

Busy Body has returned me to my comfort zone.

With the tech age, many of these warm writing rituals have escaped me.

At the beginning of my son's school years, I do pass through the now small aisles with journals, but with the demise of "Mom and Pop" book stores, the place where I store my thoughts is often within the hard drive of my laptops!

I most enjoyed the pockets and eye-friendly layouts of the Busy Body Book. It also has sturdy covering for Moms who tend to shove things in accessible places. Having this strength makes the Busy Body Book handy. The paper is thick and the grids assist with categorizing and prioritizing.

The Busy Body Book's weight is impressive. As a mom, we lug so much that it's very helpful when things are lightweight and sturdy.

Recommending this is easy. Sometime you simply need a note pad, a place to jot deep thoughts, a handy note-pad, or organizing your life and that of your family.

Jan Goldner has put thought and care into her product and given us a space to carefully chronicle our brain junk!

That makes me feel awesome.

I can not believe that I am still excited about my weekend with the 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid!

I miss the smooth ride, the comfortable seating, the head-room, the gas mileage, the flexibility in parking, OnStar and XM.

The Hybrid technology fascinated me.

I kept saying to the fleet vehicle deliverer - "Well, how does it charge? Do I need to plug it in?" He chuckled and described the innovative technology.

The battery self charges when you break or are idling at a stop light! It uses regular gas and toted me from Schaumburg and back using very little fuel!

How awesome is that?

The gray coloring also had me smitten.

Chevrolet has really paid great attention to comfort and detail.

Honestly, examining the scope of GM's capabilities has put me further in an enamored state.

Is there anything at all that displeases me about the Chevy vehicles I've tested?

So far, NOPE!

My love pours out with a force that baffles me.

I am confident and totally secure in me.

At 20, my thoughts of being 43, were decrepit and aging thoughts. I never imagined I would have the vigor and stamina I enjoy.

I happily conquer the world every day.

Living your best life may be part psychology and part physiology, but once all the pieces are in place, life simply doesn't get better than this.

Notes From Chevy Missions ~ Chevy Moms Week of April 17th:

"Wow, where do I begin......I was in heaven for an entire week while I had the joy and privilege of driving the Chevy Traverse. The highlight of the week was probably the fact that the entire family (2 adults, 4 kids) could fit in the Traverse and room for backpacks, sports gear, groceries, etc. Didn't take the 2 cats for a drive but they would fit too, no problem! What a pleasant experience to drive in the city of Chicago when most of the time it is not. I loved the smooth ride, heated seats, side mirrors folding in with the press of a button, starting the car from afar and the automatic rear door. My 4 teenagers were obsessed with the stereo and all the channels and of course watching movies while another listens to music makes everyone happy. Since I have taken the "Oprah pledge" to not use the phone or text while driving, the hands-free telephone was probably the most useful. The mirror and beeping noise when in reverse were very helpful when backing out of our garage and parking on the streets. I needed a little more time to get used to the mirror as it seemed that I did not have as much room as the mirror showed I had. Recently I professed my love for coffee and received information about Fair Trade and drinking responsibly.

House: Trans Fair USA supports and promotes Fair Trade in the United States. Please tell us about your tracking from farm to finished product.

Ms. Wagner: TransFair USA works with an international network of Fair Trade organizations to contract with each party involved in the product supply chain--from Farm to Importer to Brand or Retailer--to ensure that farmers recieve fair prices for their products and that the Fair Trade community development funds are paid. These funds help provide farming families with critical social support such as access to health care, education, transportation and more to help alleviate poverty in these communities.

House: Why is this agenda important?

Ms Wagner: In the countries that provide most of the food products we enjoy, farmers and workers don't have employment protections--fair wages, representation, negotiation power, etc--that we take for granted. These regions also tend to be extremely poor, and vulnerable to weather fluxuations as well as global prices and middlemen who will pair pennies on the dollar for their products. Fair Trade helps to organize the farmers and workers into cooperatives that have the ability to connect directly with the global market place, gain access to credit and stable prices for their crops, and give all workers a voice in the workplace. Another element unique to Fair Trade is the Fair Trade premium. These funds help provide farming families with critical social support such as access to health care, education, transportation and more to help alleviate poverty in these communities.

House: Tell us about the men and women impacted by Fair Trade.

Ms. Wagner: For more than 35,000 Rwandan coffee families, Fair Trade certification has translated into new schools, improved healthcare, new clean water wells, and long-term economic security. Sales of Spring Revival Blend will continue to generate additional income for farmers as well as Fair Tradepremium funds to invest in social programs. Overall, GMCR purchased over 16.2 million pounds of Fair Trade Certified coffee from Africa, Asia and Latin America during its fiscal 2009. These purchases resulted in over $1.6 million in social premiums paid to farmers in the developing world.

Fair Trade is just that--it's trade, not aid. We're helping farmers to build sustainable businesses and all consumers need to do is ask for Fair Trade when they order their morning coffee and look for the Fair Trade Certified label when they shop at the grocery store. Through conscious shopping, we've been able to send just under $200 million to the developing world in just 11 years.
